Sharing our Expertise

Our Biennial Quilt show is just a few weeks away!  So for the past two meetings, a number of our Guild members have shared their knowledge and expertise with everyone.  Many of the skills that were demonstrated can be used to help with prepartions for the upcoming quilt show. 

First and foremost, and probably the most critical, Jeannette T. gave a demonstration showing how to make a quilt sleeve.  To hang a quilt in a show, it needs a proper sleeve attached to the back of the quilt that is both wide enough and long.  It must to be at least 4 inches wide with a pleat to give fullness to the sleeve and must extend to within a half inch from each end of the quilt.  No sleeve, or an inadequate sleeve on a quilt? There's a good chance that quilt won't be on exhibit this time.  Thanks, Jeannette, for showing everyone how to make a great sleeve!

Anne O. and Carleen F. showed folks how to make the pillowcases our guild makes and donates  through ConKerr Cancer.  They prefer pillowcases with French seams.  Serged seams are fine too, but please, bury those thread tails!  Anne reports that the children like to pull on loose serger threads, resulting in their pulling the pillowcase apart.  Not so good!

Eileen T. gave her excellent "Fearless Free Motion Quilting" demonstration.  She even brought along samples of her free motion quilting over the years.  Each of the quilts was labelled with a date and what she thought could have been done better!  She does some amazing quilting!! 

During the snow and bitter cold last winter, Janet H. feel in love with a pair of mittens she sewed up from an old felted wool sweater and lined with fleece. She thinks they would be a great addition to the Boutique table at the Quilt Show. They are really warm!!

Annie D. demonstrated some adorable, tiny, 3 dimensional flying geese blocks. They are so cute!!
